Setting up a linux box

In a few days I’m going to set up my computer with linux.
The reason for this you can find here: my new toy.
“Ok” I thought now you’ll enter the world of notebook users.
But e.g. how do I manage my files now?
Setting up a Windows Network?
I tried this too often (Ok sometimes it worked 
)
-> Setting up a linux box as my workstation and fileserver.
Sounds better! 
I’m going to use the brand new linux distribution ubuntu – linux based on debian.
